Drinking too much alcohol increases people’s risk of injuries, violence, drowning, liver disease and some types of cancer. This April, during Alcohol Awareness Month, SEARHC is encouraging all community members to learn about the dangers of drinking too much.

According to the Alaska Department of Health and Services, “Alaska has one of the highest per capita alcohol consumption rates in the nation and the prevalence of alcohol dependence and alcohol abuse…twice the national average,” and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services has data that shows Alcohol poisoning death rates rank highest in Alaska. In addition, a new study suggests that too much alcohol in middle age can increase your stroke risk as much as high blood pressure or diabetes.

SEARHC is joining other organizations across the country to honor Alcohol Awareness Month by spreading the word and help prevent alcohol abuse.

If you are drinking too much, you can improve your health by cutting back or quitting. If you are concerned about someone else’s drinking, offer to help.

Please contact your local clinic for more information or to make an appointment with a medical provider.
